Clarity for Our Multi-Campus Future

Why We Use Campus Names at Bay Leaf

We remain one church with one mission—and now worship in two locations. Learn why campus names help us stay clear, connected, and united as we grow.

One Church. Two Locations. One Mission.

As Bay Leaf grows into a multi-campus model, you may be wondering: Why do we need campus names? Why “Falls Lake” and “540”? And what does this mean for us?

We want to be transparent about the heart behind this decision and reassure you that nothing is fundamentally changing about who we are as a church.

As we grow into a multi-campus model, we will begin referring to our campuses as:

  • Bay Leaf Baptist Church at Falls Lake  (our existing campus)
  • Bay Leaf Baptist Church at 540  (our new gathering at Sycamore Creek Elementary)

These names are a practical tool to help us clearly communicate locations while maintaining unity.

Below, you’ll find a summary of the big ideas and answers to the most common questions we’ve received.

Why We're Introducing Campus Names (Without Changing Our Church Name)

You might have heard that we're giving each of our campuses a distinct name. If you're wondering why—especially since our overall church name isn't changing—you're not alone. We want to be clear:

We are still Bay Leaf Baptist Church – one church, unified by our mission to make disciples locally and globally for the glory of God. That foundation is unchanged.

We're simply adding clearer labels to our locations, not creating a new identity.

Our church name, mission, and beliefs are staying the same. We're not trying to replicate the model of a large multi-site church; we're staying focused on what God has uniquely called Bay Leaf to be.

Introducing campus names helps us:

  • Communicate clearly to guests and members
  • Avoid confusion between locations
  • Reflect the local communities we serve
  • Foster a sense of belonging and mission at each campus
  • Provide consistency and clarity as we grow into a multi-campus church

Think of it like a family sharing a last name, but each person still has a first name. We're still Bay Leaf. We're just identifying where people gather.

Frequently Asked Questions

As we prepare to officially launch our second campus gathering at Sycamore Creek Elementary, we need a way to clearly distinguish between our two active locations. Campus names help avoid confusion in announcements, signage, registration forms, and everyday conversations—especially for newcomers who may not be familiar with our geography.

Bay Leaf Baptist Church at Falls Lake (our existing campus)

Bay Leaf Baptist Church at 540 (our new gathering at Sycamore Creek Elementary)

Our current campus has served the Raleigh community since 1880, and it remains a central part of who we are. While it has often simply been referred to as "Bay Leaf"—and many will likely continue to use that name, which is completely okay—we also recognize the need for external clarity as we move into a multi-campus model of ministry.

"Bay Leaf" on its own doesn’t offer much context for those unfamiliar with our church or the area’s history. In contrast, "Falls Lake" is a widely recognized landmark across Raleigh and Wake County. In fact, many of the neighborhoods surrounding our campus already use "at Falls Lake" in their community names, showing that it's a natural and familiar geographic reference.

Choosing "Bay Leaf Baptist Church at Falls Lake" helps us speak clearly to the broader public while also honoring the legacy of the campus. This name is not about replacing our church’s identity or history; it’s about providing clarity for those who are new, while continuing to affirm what this place has meant for generations. It affirms where we’ve been and helps us communicate where we’re going. This name reflects both our deep roots and our desire to continue welcoming new people into the life and mission of our church.

Many in our church family have affectionately referred to the future property as the “Creedmoor Road campus”—and rightly so. That name has served us well internally as a clear and familiar reference point. In fact, our leadership team gave serious consideration to continuing with it. However, after much prayer, conversation, and evaluation, we came to the conclusion that “540” offers a stronger name for communicating externally. Interstate 540 is a widely recognized and easily identifiable corridor that signals accessibility to people across Raleigh and beyond. While “Creedmoor Road” connects with those who already know our church, “540” helps us extend our reach to those who don’t—particularly families in Knightdale, Wake Forest, and other areas along the northern corridor. Someone in Knightdale, for example, may hear “Bay Leaf Baptist Church at 540” and immediately think, That’s just a quick drive down 540—I can attend that church. “Creedmoor Road,” by contrast, is more localized and only immediately recognizable to a portion of Raleigh. Using “540” helps us communicate that this campus is for the region, not just a neighborhood.

We considered several naming options, including:

Bay Leaf – North Raleigh Campus
Bay Leaf – Bartons Creek Campus
Bay Leaf – Creedmoor Road Campus
Bay Leaf – Outer Loop Campus

Ultimately, many potential names overlapped or felt unclear due to the close proximity of the campuses. We selected Falls Lake and 540 because they are distinct, regionally recognizable, and tied to the actual geography surrounding each campus.

No. We are one church with one shared name, leadership, and mission. Campus names are simply a way to identify where people are gathering and serving. We intentionally avoid terms like "main campus" or "satellite campus" to emphasize our unity.

We are adopting a version of the federation model of multi-campus ministry. That means we operate as one church contextualized in multiple locations. Each campus may eventually have its own local preaching and leadership expression, but all campuses remain united under a single identity, mission, and pastoral leadership.

We followed best practices used by other churches with healthy multi-campus models:

Clarity: Names should be simple and easy to communicate

Geographic distinction: Particularly important when campuses are close together

Unified identity: We remain Bay Leaf Baptist Church at every location

Balanced language: Avoids language that implies hierarchy (e.g., "main campus")

We understand naming is personal. While our leadership team is unified in this direction, we’re open to continued feedback. Our goal is unity, clarity, and gospel impact.

Still have questions? We’d love to talk. Reach out to any of our pastors or staff. We’re here to walk through this together as a church family.
